Adapting Physical Board Games to Cross-Platform Digital Experiences with Flutter & Flame

Lessons from building Hunter, the digital edition of Hunted: Mining Colony 415, for web, Android and iOS from a single Flutter + Flame codebase.

Why a digital adaptation?

Board games create deep, social experiences, but they need a table, components and everyone in one room. A digital edition takes the same experience anywhere — as long as the soul of the tabletop game survives.

Choosing the stack

  • Flutter: one codebase for web (PWA), Android and iOS
  • Flame Engine: game loop, sprites, animation and input
  • Forge2D: 2D physics for movement and collisions
  • NestJS + PostgreSQL: licensing, payments and unified accounts

From paper rules to a state machine

The first step was turning the rulebook into an explicit state machine: turns, the phases of each turn, allowed actions and win/lose conditions. Rules expressed as data and state are testable and ready for new game modes.

The hard parts

  1. Hidden information. At the table, players hide their cards; digitally, the UI has to recreate that feeling.
  2. Tactile feel. The sound of dice and moving pieces is part of the fun; SFX and short animations bring it back.
  3. Web performance. The PWA must stay smooth on low-end mobile browsers; limiting sprite counts and compressing assets was essential.

Business model

Hunter ships with a freemium model, level locks and device-bound licensing, with accounts and payments handled by Hall Game Store's central server so future games reuse the same infrastructure.

Result

The Hunter MVP is live on the web, and the same blueprint now drives the upcoming physical and digital board games of Hall Game Store.
